Research

I already gave a broad overview of my research in my biography, but for those of you who want to know more (because, who can’t get enough?), here’s a little more information. I am currently interested in the following research questions.

With my clinical-based research:

– How do end-of-life care discussions differ across racial groups?

– How do cancer screening discussions differ across racial groups?

– What accounts for racial disparities in end-of-life care?

– How can good patient-physician communication be used to reduce lung cancer stigma and improve patient outcomes?

– How does religiosity/spirituality influence end-of-life care decisions and affect coping with advanced cancer diagnoses?

– How do race, religion, and culture influence basic health communication and decision-making?

With my lab-based research:

– How do race, religion, and culture influence basic health communication and decision-making?

– How can cultural, racial, and religious differences be incorporated into health communication to improve health outcomes?

– What is the effect of racial and religious attitudes on intergroup bias, political and social policies, and morality?

My goal is to examine the overlap between racial, religious/spiritual, and educational factors that influence physician-patient communication and patients’ decision-making. Ultimately, I want to know how patient-physician communication is affected by these varying factors and how it can ultimately be improved so that patients’ psychological and health-related outcomes can improve.
